Foothills’ 26th season showcases world-famous classical masterpieces, popular favorites, chamber music, and even music you may hear for the first time.
Dvořák – Slavonic Dances, Op. 72 Dvorák’s characteristic folk melodies and colorful harmonies are set in eight folk dances freely moving across the Slavic world. They are rousing and reflective – stately and energetic – closing with a calmy graceful Bohemian waltz. The music is vigorous, witty, and highly rhythmic.
Strauss – Der Fledermaus One of the most famous overtures ever written, it's impossible not to enjoy Der Fledermaus (The Bat). This absolute marvel of light-hearted fun classical music starts off with the predicament of a drunk man left at a party in a Bat costume. (The original “Batman”??) BTW an abridged version of the overture is conducted by Tom and Jerry in the 1950 cartoon Tom and Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl.

A night of celebration with Russian masters Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov.
Borodin – Polovtsian Dances Bright tone colors, graceful melodic lines, and energetic rhythms create a feeling of celebration and joy. The 1953 musical Kismet is mostly adapted from Borodin's music, including these dances. Stranger in Paradise is adapted from the Gliding Dance of the Maidens. Do you recall the opening of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi – a flying girl sweeping through a winter dreamscape? The music was from Polovtsian Dances.
Rimsky-Korsakov – Russian Easter Festival Overture is an ode to nature’s blazing rebirth after winter’s dark slumber. Solemn chants, combined with folk music and joyful revelry, reflect the transition from the somberness of Passion Week to the jubilance of Easter Sunday. The music calms the mind and stirs hope in the soul.
As a pre-Thanksgiving tradition, Foothills asks their audience to help Greer Community Ministries replenish their food pantry for needy families by donating canned goods at this performance.

Saint- Saens – Introduction and Rondo Cappriccio. Future Star Competition winner Olivia Lee performs with Foothills Philharmonic a work that is in the repertoire of all the great violinists. A fantasy in the Spanish manner, it is full of poetry and lyricism, syncopation and virtuosity with a finale where the violin plays to the point of exhaustion.
Glière – Symphony No. 1 in E flat Major. This powerful symphony is unmistakenly Russian. It starts off light then serious; it combines ballet music with folk songs; then becomes somber and reflective before being dragged back into the light with echoes of the first movement. This symphony is like “moody Russian music on happy pills.”
Loaves and Fishes will be in the lobby where you can learn how they rescue surplus food and redistribute it, free of charge, to reduce food insecurity in Greenville County.
